Support » Plugin: Slimstat Analytics » Middle-click (open link in new tab) is ignored

  • Resolved Grant Winney

I noticed a few weeks ago that certain links on my site (not all) open in the same browser tab, even when I middle-click with the mouse (which normally opens in a new tab).

One-by-one, I disabled the theme and all plug-ins, and the culprit ended up being WP Slimstat. I was running 3.9.4, so I upgraded to 3.9.5, but the issue persisted.

After reading thisismyway’s comments in a previous thread, I disabled just the “Track Outbound Clicks” option (everything else, including spy mode, left as-is), and the problem went away. I toggled the option back and forth a few times to make sure, and it’s definitely that one option.

Links open in a new tab as expected, whenever I click a link generated by WordPress (such as a blog post header, or a link in the “recent posts” widget). But when I middle click a link that I typed in to, say, a “Text” widget, it opens in the same tab anyway. I have to right-click and select “open link in new tab”.

I’m running Chrome 40.0.2214.94m, but it happens in IE 11 as well.

So, I found a work-around, but just wanted to bring it to your attention. Thanks for a great plugin!

Yes, this is a known issue, and unfortunately we’re not aware of any effective solution at this time. Tracking clicks on outbound links might trigger a popup blocker in your browser, so we use callback functions in javascript to achieve the same result without making the browser suspicious. Unfortunately one side effect is the “middle-click” issue. If you’re okay with NOT tracking outbound links, then you can just deactivate that feature in the settings and everything will be back to normal.

Thank you for looking into this!
