  • I’m amazed that MichaelH (possibly a WP admin.) could be blocking my IP trying to view the “Advance Topics”. It makes you wonder why the contents were put there in the first place. How he could come to the conclusion that “.. your IP… was identical to baron (spam)..” I don’t know.

Michael if you’re view please take away those locks. You got it wrong in making that assumption. I’ve only just setup my blog still trying to set and treak things on my blog. You may have done it with good intentions but it was a wrong assumption.

    Kindest regards,

  • Now that we’re done with our rant, could you explain (more detail, less emotion) what it is you can’t do?

    sounds like Akismet?

Unless this is a issue…, but I do agree. More information is sorely needed.

I don’t recognize the poster from over at

    Not Akismet.

If I had to guess, I’d say he was going to make a codex (wiki) edit?

If I was going to continue to theorize, I’d say that he happens to have the IP of someone that was blocked from the codex. MichaelH does a lot with codex, which is why I’m theorizing that direction.

But yeah, definitely need to know more.

I believe you have been unblocked by Carthik.

Several times recently, users have beened block as a result of previous blocks made to Codex spammers.

Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for reporting your problem.

If the block happens again, please feel free to contact me.

I was attempting to set up a new WordPress Blog, working my way through “Options” in the Admin Panel. I was working in the Permalink options, and wanted to go deeper, so I clicked on a link that said “a number of options are available.” The link took me to the following URI:

I was curious about the following entry on the page

    mod_rewrite (“Pretty Permalinks”)

These are the holy grail of permalinks. There are many different formats, but the most common, and most versatile looks like

It just stops there, and there is a greyed out, boxed EDIT to the side, which I clicked, thinking that perhaps I could read the content in the edit page, although I wouldn’t be able or permitted to edit. That didn’t happen: I just got this message, which has confused others, also.

Your user name or IP address has been blocked by MichaelH.
    The reason given is this:
Autoblocked because you share an IP address with “Aukcje”. Reason “spammer”.

You may contact MichaelH or one of the other administrators to discuss the block. Note that you may not use the “email this user” feature unless you have a valid email address registered in your user preferences. Your IP address is Please include this address in any queries you make.

I have a reseller account with Hostgator, and presumably do share an IP address. Before I go to them and look foolish with an accusation that someone at my shared IP address is a spammer, and should be knocked off their server, I would like to know that this message is valid, and relevant to what I was doing.

Your IP address shouldn’t be your host but your internet service provider (unless they are the same). In other words: the company that sold you the internet access.

Thanks for the correction. That still doesn’t answer the question “Who is MichaelH and what is he doing?” Since there is no maillink to him or to Administration, he just makes an accusation and then leaves me with no way to follow up.

I am afraid you have a reading impairment. Nobody accused you with anything – if I read that message correctly. It says you share an IP address with a spammer, i.e. the spammer named “Aukcje” logs to the internet from the same IPS (maybe he’s your naighbour? LOL – just kidding), and the admin of the Codex blocked everybody from that IP address. That’s the nature of the shared IP addresses that are assigned to us by our internet providers.

As for contact… click above your post on MH’s name.

petersig–you should be ‘unblocked’ on Codex. When someone spams Codex they get blocked. For some unknown reason, in the last several months, something happens where certain IP addresses get blocked. I’ve been blocked myself.

Apologies for any inconvenience this has caused you.

Thanks, MichaelH, for unblocking me. Except I still can’t find out the three types of Permalink. Oh, OK. If I go to the right and work through the TOC, I get each kind of Permalink. The problem is with wrapping. I had to change the size down to 90% in Netscape 7.2/Sea Monkey [View] menu, before I could see all of the mod_rewrite and “almost pretty” types of Permalinks.

I finally have the information I need.
