Support » Fixing WordPress » messing with theme editor/theme/search template ruined my site!

  • i had a wordpress blog being used to serve as our website (we are an auto performance shop: http://www.powerzamcam.com) and there has relatively been no problems. but recently i noticed the site looked the way i wanted it to on firefox, but safari and ie showed some issues. hoping to fix them myself, i tried changing the theme and theme editor tabs within the wordpress interface and with the search template tool. i actually wanted to remove the ‘search’ bar altogether, but ended up ruining my site! i restored the site back a week through dreamhost (our server) but to no avail.

we had a custom theme and we loved it, but it seems things are out of control now and we’re at a loss about what to do next.

is there a way to restore or revert back to an early date back to what we had?

    thanks!

When you edit something through the theme editor, it makes a *.bak file of whatever file you edited. This way, if you muck it up, you can revert it. Unfortunately, if you continue to edit, it overwrites that backup file. So look in your theme directory for the backup file and see if it will undo your changes.

Failing that, you may just need to find a copy of your theme before you broke it. The theme itself is probably the only problem here, since that’s all you edited.

Failing even that, you may just need to fix your theme. Remember than even little changes can break a webpage in a seemingly horrible way, so it’s really just a matter of figuring out what exactly is wrong and then repairing it.

i appreciate all your help. since i was not the one that started and handled the site, you’ll have to excuse my web design & wordpress ignorance. i looked in the theme directory and it seems the template was ‘blix’. that layout looks exactly as mine did. i know the designer altered the actual code within the theme, so if i download this theme, won’t all that be changed and i will be in trouble trying to get it how it was?

    thanks again,
