A client of mine is looking for a "membership" site with varying levels of membership (free, paid, VIP, etc.) and I think I'd be stretching WP to its limits whereas maybe I should just use something like VisionGate. Here's some of her laundry list:

-- a few thousand members with unique logins ([x]WP)
-- payment info per user (paid, subscription info (e.g. expires in 2 weeks) ([o]WP? Maybe integrated with PayPal? Maybe integrated with Subscribers Only,
-- locking when 2 people try to login with the same user info/password ([o]WP),
-- newsletter manager (I know of this Mailing List plugin),
-- shopping cart (I like WP-E-Commerce Lite so far),

Frankly, I'd rather use WP because I'm familiar with it, but this VisionGate seems to do all of these things out of the (expensive) box.

Thanks for any thoughts on the matter.

I once installed aMember for a client: http://amember.com/
It seems more reasonable to pay once 135 than 97/mo ;)

I would run as far away as possible from Visiongate - nothing but problems, terrible support! The Rolls Royce of membership scripts is http://www.membergate.com GREAT support and virtually NO problems!

Update: client went with VisionGate and regrets it. Poor service, product didn't perform as promised, etc. She's still with it (stuck with it), but isn't happy.
