I’m not sure I understand what you are asking.

This plugin creates a custom post type called “member”. Are you also trying to use “member” as a position? If so, you may want to change that to something like “general member” so that WordPress doesn’t get confused between post type and taxonomy (position/category).

Each member in the directory is its own WordPress post of the custom post type “member”.

I get that…it seems what I am asking cannot be done. Using general member did the same thing – because I need to use the same position for so many names it cannot list the member or general member position next to each name.

And so I was going to remove the position for the general members but then they don’t show up in the directory so that is not an option either.

Thank you for such a fast reply.

    Raja,
I know what you are talking about. On the other hand, I much prefer have them grouped when multiple people have the same position. This allows for group emails to all people in that position. Looking at your site, maybe turn on your table borders. Mine are on by default. This will show the groupings then.

I am not sure what theme you are using, but by default (at least on mine) it centers the position to all people in that group.

See my page with all of the positions to get the idea:

You can post that as a feature request in the feature request area of the forum on my plugin site, but, no, the plugin doesn’t currently work that way.

Please note, however, that since it is a custom post type, you can create your own archives template and show the data any way that you want. The members are all posts, positions and locations are taxonomies (like categories), and the other personal data are just custom postmeta fields. So, with a bit of PHP and HTML you could create your own template, or hire somebody to do that for you. A lot of code could be borrowed from my plugin for retrieving and displaying the data.

I had originally planned on doing some kind of custom view creator extension for the directory, where you could specify how you want the data displayed, and customize the layout a bit, but I’m too busy with paying gigs, and these free plugins do not generate any revenue, and thus get low priority (other than fixing conflicts or bugs and making sure they work with current WP versions).

You could also look into the Views plugin in the Toolset collection of plugins, which lets you create custom views with any set of data, without having to do any programming. I have used it in the past to create a simple tutor directory and submission forms for a client web site.

Table borders definitely helps, thanks Larry!

Thank you for such responsiveness in this forum for the plugin. I know the freebies don’t make money and so I am thankful when the support is so good and fast. It may not be exactly what I envisioned but it still looks great and is free so thank you so much for creating this tool for us to use when we aren’t able to buy plugins. I’m just starting out so maybe when I learn PHP I can customize this more and create my own archives template. Views may be another route I can go.

    Thank you so much!
