• This problem has plagued me for the past week. I’ve tried everything mentioned here and none of the posted solutions seem to fix my problem. I’m not sure why this is happening as it happened all of a sudden. My server environment hasn’t changed (I verified this with my host).

What happens is when I attempt to upload images, the “crunching” text appears, and the loading bar reaches the end … and just stops. This forces me to have to use the browser uploader, which is slower and not as efficient for uploading multiple images.

Can anyone help me with this???

  • I have the same problem. My WordPress is 2.6. This suddenly started happening 2-3 days ago and I do not know why.

Sometimes when I upload an image, it MIGHT work fine. When I upload multiple images, it almost always gets stuck at crunching or an I/O error will occur asking me to dismiss and try later. The uploads that reach full “Crunching” but get stuck at that point are still uploaded but I have to close the upload window and go check the media gallery to see that it was uploaded.

I am also very frustrated because this is a sudden problem, everything was fine before, and nothing should have changed recently. HELP. 🙁

It happen to me once, I found out that the image file I’ve been tried to upload is damaged. I resave from the original, everything seems ok now.
    give it a try,

@ chinasmack: Mine freezes, but the difference between me and you is that mine don’t even upload at all. So I have to go in and use the browser version, which takes longer and is more time consuming since you can’t upload more than one image at a time. I swear … I should’ve stuck with 2.3 lol. I’ve been having a lot of problems since I upgraded to 2.5 and 2.6

@ jarch: I doubt that’s my problem … Every time I go to upload an image, I try the flash version, and it gives me the same problem. So I don’t think it’s the actual image 🙁

    Anyone else with any suggestions???

I do not think my image has a problem because I tried many different images.

I had 2.6 when it was released but this problem only began 3 days ago. Sometimes the image will upload, sometimes it will not. It is also very slow or difficult to insert image into posts. I do not know if maybe it is a problem with my host, Dreamhost, or my website. They say there is a lot of memory usage on the server and told me to try making everything more efficient but my website was fine before and I do not think I change anything or add new plugins (I tried NextGen but this was AFTER I started having problems, and then I deleted it anyway) or anything else.

So annoying, I cannot really add pictures to my website anymore without spending hours to upload, insert, or edit.

    Bump

I have the same problem with WP 2.7.1
The largest images do upload, but there are no smaller sizes being generated.
It worked fine till last week and since then it doesn’t, I only changed some things to the theme, nothing else…
It is not a Chmod or diskpace problem.

Same issue. What the hell? I tested it with lots of different sizes. It failed at sizes above 1380px in height (216kB). I swear it worked last week…

I’m having the exact same problem as the original poster, and have been for a couple months now. This has forced me to use the “browser upload” feature instead. It works, but it isn’t nearly as efficient.

It’s not the images themselves, I’ve tried every type, size and format.
It’s not my server, as I have another site that doesn’t have this issue and it sits on the same box.

    Any help would be appreciated.

My issue was related to the Scissors plugin. See this thread: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/276676?replies=4

I’m having the same issue with both the browser uploader and the flash uploader. I’ve tried disabling all plugins too. (I don’t have the Scissors plugin)

    I put

    php_value max_execution_time 600
    php_value memory_limit 256M

in .htaccess and now works ok.
