• Hi,
I’m facing an issue with how the “Uploaded To” column behaves in the Media Library.

    I’m noticing two things:

    • Some media files that are currently used on pages show no attachment in the “Uploaded To” field.
    • Some files show they are “Uploaded To” a specific page even though they are no longer used on that page.

It looks like the column only shows the original attachment, not the current usage.
I’d like to confirm if this is expected behavior in WordPress core, or if there is any recommended method or setting to make this column reflect the actual page(s) where the media is currently used.

Any guidance would be appreciated. Thanks!

The “Uploaded to” field is a relic from the days when WordPress was purely a blogging platform. An image uploaded to a post was assigned to that post. But only to one post. Nowadays, people upload countless images and sometimes use them multiple times on different pages or in different posts. However, the “Uploaded to” field can only work with one assignment.

For this reason, this information has unfortunately been treated rather “step-motherly” for years (as we say here in germany 😉 ). It is not really reliable. As soon as you use a page builder such as Elementor or Divi, it becomes even more confusing because most of them ignore this information completely.

I would therefore recommend that you ignore this column as well. Hopefully, this will change with the upcoming redesign of the admin UI, but we’ll have to wait a while for that 🙂

    Hi @threadi

Thanks a lot for the detailed explanation, that really clears things up. 👍

Good to know this behavior is actually expected and tied to how the old attachment system works. I was under the impression it tracked current usage, so your clarification saved me a lot of digging.

I’ll ignore the “Uploaded To” column as suggested. Hopefully the upcoming admin UI redesign brings some improvements to the media workflow.
