• Hello,

Yesterday I attempted to upload a JPEG image as you normally would, and it did not load correctly. Then all of a sudden all of the photos in the entire media library stopped displaying (instead showing a blank grey page) all of the photos on the site. Now, when I attempt to upload a photo, that photo is duplicated several dozens of times, displaying the blank grey page. I cannot add any photos to any pages. *Before I attempted to upload a new photo yesterday my site’s images were displayed in the media gallery **On the front end my site is running properly. I did some research and contacted my host via suggestions that it may have been caused by an update they did causing effect on file permissions… But they say that’s not it and that they’re looking more into it but think it’s a wordpress issue.

Anyway, if anyone could shed some light/ have any suggestions I would really appreciate the help!! Thanks in advance!

    Have you tried:

    • flushing any caching plugins you might be running, as well as server and/or browser caches.
    • deactivating all plugins (yes, all) to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s). If you can’t get into your admin dashboard, try resetting the plugins folder by FTP or PhpMyAdmin (read “How to deactivate all plugins when you can’t log in to wp-admin” if you need help). Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems. Also remember to deactivate any plugins in the mu-plugins folder. The easiest way is to rename that folder to mu-plugins-old
    • switching to the Twenty Fourteen theme to rule out any theme-specific problems. If you can’t log in to change themes, you can remove the theme folders via FTP so the only one is twentyfourteen. That will force your site to use it.
    • manually upgrading. When all else fails, download a fresh copy of the latest.zip file of WP (top right on this page) to your computer, and use that to copy up. You may need to delete the wp-admin and wp-includes folders on your server. Read the Manual Update directions first.

Hi Ipstenu, thanks so much for all the ideas. I have yet to try all except for clearing caches and copying the core wordpress files over from the new installation and see if it helped, but it didn’t work… I just opted back to my backup, pre- WP 4.0 update since I need to get somethings up on the front end, and I am going to try your suggestions after the business day.

I wish I thought earlier to try deactivating the plugins/switching the theme to see if there’s some kind of interference from something there. I think that could be the trick!

I’ll leave the thread open for now to update whether these things help!

    Cheers!

    Hi Igpowell,

I haven’t run the update on all my sites yet, but I had similar trouble building a new site.

While I haven’t checked extensively, whenever I tried to open the media gallery it would lag and then never load (this would happen going direct to the media gallery or putting media in a post or via a plugin). Similarly if I tried to upload media, it would appear to not complete (although it was).

I was running two image plugins: EWWW image optimiser and Imsanity. Disabling these solved the problem. It’s possible these plugins aren’t playing nice with the new media layout.

Anyway, after my long winded response. Are you running either of these plugins? Might be the problem…

    Hello guys,

I have the same problem here. Always when I try to upload the media file, it is uploaded several hundreds of times. It started to happen afte WP update to 4.0.

Is there any solution of this situation now?

Hi Brewinreview- Thanks for your suggestions. I do not use an image plugins… But I do think it’s probably a plugin issue/theme issue causing interference since not everyone in the WP community is having this issue….

I apologize I actually avoided troubleshooting this for some days now and I’m back on it. I originally reverted back to a backup: pre-WP 4.0 update and I am currently trying the suggestions of Ipstenu (thanks again!) since unfortunately the issue still persist.

To Jancek, I’ll be sure to communicate my findings whether positive or negative. We can also compare the plugins we use to see if we have anything overlap.

Success! It was the WPML Media plugin!

After re-installing WP 4.0 I updated all available plugins. Then switched them all off Ipstenu suggested. No luck. I changed to the Twenty Fourteen theme as Ipstenu. No luck. At this point I started to panic a bit because I already tried manually upgrading WP and clearing caches…. But I kept playing around a bit, and with all these on and off switches I tried a new message appeared from WPML asking me to register my site on the WPML.org website…. Hmmm I thought I already did that, but let’s do it again. Did that, and then a new plugin update appeared that didn’t appear before. WPML Media plugin update. Updated. Everything back to normal!

    Jancek, do you use WPML?

Ipstenu & BrewinReview- thanks again for the help!

I have the same problem and did all the steps listed above, including registering and updating WPML… the issue is still there…
    any other advice?

lif3zero. Double check to see if “WPML Media” plugin updated during the WPML update. It should be version 2.1.6
