Hi, I am currently on the latest version of Plugin (1.18.1). Since the update, the plugin has made Loading Media Library extremely slow ( almost 50-60 seconds).

As soon as I deactivate the plugin, everything starts working as expected. And this is the only plugin, which post deactivation makes Media Library load times normal.

I ran a health check and didnt see any issues. Should I downgrade to a previous version?

I actually did rollback, from 1.18 to 1.17. That unfortunately didn’t help.

Also, I noticed that with web stories enabled, it’s the images which take a long time to load in Media Library. If I select video from drop down, that loads as normal.

@arpitkr Hello there and thank you for reaching out. Could you share a few more details to better determine what could be causing the slow load times?

To clarify, are you referring to the media library inside of the Web Stories Editor, or the WordPress Media Library?

    Who is your hosting provider?

Could you check for any browser console errors?

@luckynasan , thanks for the quick reply.

I mean loading of Media Library everywhere, wether accessed through Web Stories, through WordPress Menu or through any other plugin which uses Media Library.

This is self hosted on azure Linux VM, which uses Nginx. The actual wordpress resides inside a docker container.

I did try looking for console errors. There were a couple of unrelated “.map” warnings, but nothing else.

As soon as I disable web stories plugin, Media Library load times return back to normal.

Do you perhaps happen to have a lot of items in your media library?

To give you some context, the Web Stories plugin automatically generates things like video posters for stories. These are then hidden from the media library to reduce noise. This could potentially slow down the media library, especially on larger sites.

To verify this, you could install this little plugin I just created: https://gist.github.com/swissspidy/12e45ef2f9f254ede2ae74207865dc2c

Click on “Download ZIP” and upload it to WordPress admin & activate the plugin.

That should unhide these media items and speed up the media library again.

Let us know if that helps.

Thanks @swissspidy , there aren’t a-lot of Media files, In total there are ~380, out of which ~80 are video files.

I just installed it. Unfortunately, it has slowed down the loading even more. Earlier, it was taking about a minute to load Library. Now its taking a good 3 minutes

Also, I dont see poster or files as such which weren’t there earlier.

Hmm, that’s odd. It should have definitely made a difference. And if anything, the load time should have went down, because the Web Stories plugin doesn’t do anything else on the media library.

Could you perhaps try debugging the media library load times using a plugin like Query Monitor? It should give you some details about slow queries/processes on that page.

Also, if you could share your Site Health information either here or via this private form, that will help us find clues as well. Maybe there’s a conflicting plugin or theme on your site.

Thanks for sharing Query Monitor, will surely check it out in details. TBH, at first glance, I couldnt find anything wrong when I used it. Probably will need to dig deeper.

Just sent information about site health in form.

@arpitkr Thank you for sharing your Site Health information. In addition to Query Monitor, could you please test what the behavior is like when only Web Stories and the mini plugin have been enabled in an incognito window?

The best way to safely simulate this is by using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin and enable its troubleshooting mode. This mode disables active plugins and switches to a default theme safely because it only affects the experience of the logged-in user.

    – Please enable the Web Stories plugin and the mini plugin then let me know if the issue is present.
    – If it is not, enable your plugins/theme one by one in this mode to help pinpoint if something else is involved.
    – Note you can disable troubleshooting mode from the plugins page.

Please let us know how you get on with this. Thank you.

Thanks @luckynasan for follow up. Interestingly enough, the query monitor doesn’t complaint at all about anything. According to monitor, once I am in Media Library, the execution time of all queries is ~.5 seconds. If the DB is fine, there must be some sort of an object/element which is blocking the load when stories is enabled

This is a production system , so unfortunately cannot do a lot of testing with it. Will be deploying a clone later in the day and will proceed as you have suggested.Just to give you a heads up, Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin isn’t yet tested on our version of WP. But will still try it.

    Will post the results soon

@arpitkr Thank you. The Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin allows you to simulate using your site with individual/all plugins disabled safely because it only affects the experience of the logged-in user. Please do let us know how you get on either way.

@arpitkr Hello there, just following up to see if you are still experiencing issues?

    Thread Starter arpitkr

    (@arpitkr)

Hi @luckynasan , so I did spent time yesterday and today to troubleshoot the issue. There doesn’t seem to be any issues with any plugins. Let me write down my findings

    1) I used Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin both on staging and production environment. Irrespective of which and how many plugins are active ( none or all), the Media Library loads fine.
    2) After a bunch of permutations, I was able to deduce the following
2.1) On the WP installation, stories plugin does not like PNGs with relative large file size
2.2) The Library load starts to slowdown as soon as a) Web Stories is enabled b) the Media Library page which is being loaded has a few large “file sized” pngs ( 1 png ~500 KB)

As I mentioned, this doesn’t happen when in troubleshooting mode.

@arpitkr Thanks for the information that’s very helpful. Do you then see improvements with the load times if you remove the PNGs mentioned but keep the Web Stories plugin active?

Could you also share some of these PNG files you mentioned via a Google Drive link? This way we can try testing with the files to see if we encounter the same experience.

    Thread Starter arpitkr

    (@arpitkr)

@adamdunnage , I removed them from staging and it seems there is improvement with load speeds

unfortunately I cannot remove those from production, so trying to resize and see if they have any impact on the speed. Below are links to a few of them

@arpitkr If you could let us know the results after you have resized them that would be great. In the meantime we will have a look at these also and see if we can replicate your experience.
