[resolved] Media Grid Issues (6 posts)

Running 4.0-beta1-20140718 with Twenty Twelve and Beta Tester plugin in Chrome.

    1. In hovering over the pencil icon it does two bad things: 1) flutters uncontrollably and 2) when you manage to click it, it doesn't go to the edit screen. You can see both these behaviors in this screencast.
    2. Generally, I'm really concerned about the lack of consistency between the grid view and table view. It feels as if the grid view will remain completely unchanged. This includes things like the buttons used to toggle between views! Switching to grid view is on the right and switching back is on the left. That's a horrible user experience and very disorienting. The jumping search and type filter aren't quite as bad but still unfortunate.
    3. There's a lack of feature parity in that the grid doesn't include the date filter.

The second and third issues make me come away from testing feeling like there are now two media libraries rather than two views of a single library.

I'd posit that the best solution to this issue would be to adjust the white bar in grid view to include the date filter and then show it in both grid and table view. In table view, paging would go above the bar in addition to remaining below the table.

Without these changes, the grid view feels not ready for core.

  2. 1. Reproduced that one. Ticket made: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/28945

    2. Yeah, I'm not entirely sure about that. They're different views, and the layouts are going to be different... But looking for things in different places is weird. Kinda torn.

    3. Lack of filter parity has a ticket: https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/28944

Regarding the UI, minor difference are ok but the jumping toggle just feels really really wrong. It's like flipping a light switch and then having to walk across the room to turn it back on.

  4. Oh so you've seen my living room? (I wish I was joking, but I have three switches for one light and they have to all be in the right position for things to work.)

I don't know how much love it's getting, and three are other issues with that toggle out and out vanishing if your screen is too small.

Eesh. Is this guaranteed to be in 4.0? Makes me nervous. These sound like some pretty basic problems that should be easier to rectify than your living configuration :)

There we go :) Talked to Mel and Helen, yes, this will be addressed.
