Max Width Images already in Library?

  • Is there any way of resizing the original pictures in your media library to a max width? I’ve discovered that many of the pictures that me and my cowriters have uploaded are as large as 2000px or more in width, and my theme never uses pictures that large.

So; is there a plugin or similar that can plow through the entire media library and resize the original images if they are larger than X pixels in width? I don’t want to create new thumbnails or anything like that, I just want to get rid of the massive originals and replace them with smaller originals.

If not, can anybody anticipate a problem if I chose to do this manually, by taking all the files in /uploads and using a script to resize them outside of WordPress?
