Noted disproportionately large MySQL db(>1 Gig) for modest WordPress sites recently, and tracked it down to these Simple History tables:
    wp_simple_history_contexts
    wp_simple_history

Is it possible to remove these db records as part of Simple Histroy’s built in archive process to avoid MySQL bloat ?

Do you have a large amount of logged events in Simple History? If you get like 100.000 login attempts during a day it can indeed grow large (happens to me sometimes because of brute force hacker attempts).

So if we do get lots of failed logins do we just need to manually clear our history? is that the fix?

Yup, clear the history and the tables show be cleared. Old events are automatically purged after 60 days also.

Also, since you seem to have a large amount of hacker attacks please consider installing for example Jetpack and activate the BruteProtect module
