Support » Fixing WordPress » Massive download time on tiny images

  • Hi guys,

I’m testing my site on several waterfall websites. I’m noticing that some pictures on my page are taking 3-4 seconds to download. I’ve tried putting my site on Cloudflare, no difference. Tried putting it on Cloudfront, and seems almost worse.

One image for example has time to first byte 1808ms, and download time of 1681ms. File is 33kb.

I don’t get it, this is a tiny little image. The only thing I can think of is that a few of my images are being resized automatically but I would think that would only mean that the original 33kb file is being downloaded and then resized.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks very much!

I *think* I found your site & it looks like you activated through a CloudFlare hosting partner. Are you checking www or the root domain?

Can you provide a link to your site? What are the sizes of the images? I would bet they aren’t ‘Tiny’. They may look tiny , but I bet they are large images with small dimensions set.

    Thanks,
    Evan

Hey Damon, I’m checking on the www as this is how I’ve configured my WordPress. Should I be checking just the domain ie. likeyourlife.com?

Evan, thanks for the reply. Site is http://www.likeyourlife.com – if you can see something I would be eternally grateful. Every picture is around 33kb, about 520 x 245. I am aware that these are being resized smaller and can shave some kb off them, but I wouldn’t think 33kb per image would be overkill, would it?

I think my cheap webhost is also partially to blame as sometimes the first time to byte is around 1.5 seconds (1263ms as tested a minute ago) although Google PageSpeed says it’s around 0.46 seconds.

I’m getting 89 on the PageSpeed portion of GTMetrix, and 93 on Yslow so it would appear that I’m reasonably optimized.

    Thanks heaps guys!
