My wp_sitemeta table, with this plugin enabled, grew to over 30GB. Any thoughts as to why this would happen and how to prevent it?

Hi thefish2019, in the lock log do you see a huge amount of records as well?

I just finally found the control panel for the plugin. It’s showing nearly 29,000 lockouts. But I cleared the log, and it didn’t reduce the size of the table.

Hi, can you please look into your DB directly and see what exactly eats up space?

So here’s the truly bizarre thing. The bloat on the table didn’t start until I enabled this plugin, and it stops growing when I disable it (which I did for several hours yesterday). The table had grown so large that it had actually eaten all of the free space on my server, and was causing the operating system to have problems. So I exported all of the data. That export….on the 31GB table…was about 1.5MB. This is a WP Multisite install if that makes any difference, and there are 19 sites on it.

So, because I had to reclaim my space, I exported all data, deleted the table, then restored it from the export file. The table was back and fully functional, but this time taking about 10MB of space. Within a day, however, the table size had shot up again to 400MB. That’s where it stands now, after having just cleared the lock log.

So somehow, the plugin is causing the table size to grow at a fast rate with each lockout, but the actual data contained within it doesn’t seem to be the source of size growth. I have never seen anything like this, and I haven’t been able to find anything online about others experiencing it. But it does seem to be somehow related to your plugin.

Edit: I just optimized the table in MySQL Workbench. It went from 400MB down to 7MB. Not sure if that provides any clues as to what’s happening. My guess is that by tomorrow it will be growing fast again, so at least I know how to fix it with a few clicks, but it would require me to do this daily, and is still something that shouldn’t be happening.

Interestingly, the table hasn’t grown to a crazy amount since I did the table optimization in MySQL workbench. So that seems to have been a permanent fix.

    Hi thefish2019,

Yeah, table optimization usually helps. We saw similar behaviour with another app (IPB or PHPBB, not sure) and the fix was to optimize/repair a table.

Thank you for letting know that you have found the solution!

FYI, this was not a permanent solution. I left it alone for a week, and it’s back up to 3GB. I just did optimization, and it was dropped to 7MB. There is something this plugin is doing to cause like 500X data expansion before optimization.
