Support » Fixing WordPress » margins in a new template

  • Alexia

I’m new to this forum so I hope I can specify my problem enough so that anyone will be able to help me.
At the moment I’m using the “nest”-template for my website but I would like to change to “coraline” because there are so many more options. But what I really don’t like in coraline is the way the margins are designed. They are very large. I would like a full-width page.
Is there a way of changing the margins?
Unfortunately I can’t show you the page because it is not yet published with the new theme. I’m using a Theme Tester at the moment.
Thanks very much for your help!

  • Yes, you can always modify a theme, but how complicated that might be depends entirely on the theme and how it’s coded. Layouts can be tricky because all the pieces have to fit together — so if you change one thing (i.e. margins or width), you’ll likely then need to make changes in many other places. Are you familiar with CSS at all? Firebug will be a great tool for working with CSS and this site is a good basic reference:

Also, be sure that you create a child theme before doing any modifications to any theme (unless the theme has custom CSS set up).

Thanks for your answer and the link.
I’m not really familiar with CSS to be honest, so this is quite helpful. So I have to change the margins in the stylesheet of the template?

As I said, first create a child theme and then make changes in the child theme style.css file — by adding CSS code for the elements you need to change.

Without seeing the actual site, no way to be more specific, but I’d recommend learning some CSS and how to use Firebug as a starting point.
