    Dear WordPress’ers,

I am trying to map my new domain to a subdomain on my host. I have a well functioning wordpress network set up. I can create new wordpress sites. Everything’s fine.

Then I started working with the MU plugging. I followed exactly the steps here WordPress 3.0: Multisite Domain Mapping Tutorial.

In step 4 of the tutorial I am asked to point the domain at my server. I do it through redirection (this adds A record with the IP of my server) in my OVH panel. Then I login as an admin to the subdomain.website and add the primary domain I mention in the beginning.

Now, when I use the domain, it takes me to the host – it doesn’t take me to the subdomain. Moreover, it changes the url to my host.

There are two types of redirections I can choose: visible and invisible. The invisible redirection causes the domain to display the address given. Mark that it also hides the link underneath and no matter what page you are on, the user always sees the hyperlink “www.domain.co.uk”.So, that’s not good either.

    My qeustions:
    – which of those redirections shall I use?
    – shall I point my domain to the server or to the subdomain?

Did you map the domain to the subsdomain within the plugin?

    Ipstenu:
If you ask whether I logged in to the subdomain and if, from there, I chose “domain mapping” and then added the domain as the primary domain, then yes – that’s what I did.

I will try to make it easier by giving my details.
My domain is http://www.mightyremovals.co.uk, whereas my server is mbieniek.com.

I set up a test wordprss page with the url test.mbieniek.com, and I want mightyremovals.co.uk to be the primary domain for test.mbieniek.com. The webpages are on line now.

    The last thing I tried:
I redirected the domain to mbieniek.com, I used a visible redirection for that ( so when I typed in mightyremovals.co.uk it took me to mbieniek.com and changed the url for mbieniek.com ). Then I performed the 4th step in the ottopress tutorial.

    Additional information:

    My wildcard looks as follows:
    Subdomain: *.mbieniek.com
    Target: /www
    Country: British IP
    IPv6: no

I would really appreciate any help. I might make a screenshot of my DNS records or write down exactly what I do – just let me know what you need to see/know.

That wasn’t right. The URL should never change to mbieniek.com

    Thank you Ipstenu.

The first thing in the morning I did:
I changed the type of redirection to ‘invisible’. That’s the only alternate solution. When I did that, 3 new text boxes to be filled in came up: Title / Description / Access-Key, I left the Access-Key blank.

What has changed? When I go to mightyremovals.co.uk the URL doesn’t change to mbieniek.com. Once there, when I go to “About” or “Sample-page” the URL still doesn’t change. It always stays the same, which is mightyremovals.co.uk.

In test.mbieniek.com, Settings->Domain Mapping I add mightyremovals.co.uk as my main domain. And I tick it to be the primary domain. I don’t know if that means something, but when I accept the operation, the page goes blank.

    The results:
    1. When I go to mightyremovals.co.uk it opens mbieniek.com page again.
    2. When I go to test.mbieniek.com it opens mightyremovals.co.uk.
    3. I can not go to the admin panel from mightyremovals.co.uk/wp-admin, a blank page comes up.

There are two separate things at work here.

    1) You have to tell the DOMAIN where it lives (that’s done via DNS and domain parking)

    2) You have to tell your WP install what to do when it sees that domain. (That’s the plugin)

Right now, your problem is with number one. So let’s forget the plugin for a second.

http://mightyremovals.co.uk gives what looks like a standard hosting page. I think the problem is you didn’t park the domain right. Have you asked your host how to park a domain on top of your extant one? My host has directions on how to do it if you want the domain to be it’s own (i.e. an Add-on) or just redirect (parked).

I am grateful Ipstenu for your hints. I am slowly creating the bigger image of how it works.

I have contacted OVH and apparently I missed a very important “multi domain” option. I am going leave the topic open until I solve the problem. I have to test the new options.

That sounds familiar 🙂 Some hosts have to be configured to allow multiple domains. Which is really what you’re doing 🙂

My issue sounds very similar so will leave it here for now.

I am hosted with Vodahost and setup a wildcard domain (*.entereos.com).
(Entereos.com is the main site for multisites which I was about to add.)
When I set up: test.entereos.com I was diverted to my host site (jacklovelock.com).

The subdomain, *.entereos.com is in the entereos.com directory. However CPanel does not recognise it as valid for parking. The only other option I have under subdomain admin is “Manage Redirection”. But redirected to where?

I have not dived into MU Domain Mapping yet, but that will be next. I hope then for users to see eg test.com instead of test.entereos.com. I assume this is what happens.

Later…got it sorted. The wildcard was not in the correct directory

I would be grateful for some clarification of the following problem.

Since I found the multi domains option I’ve been testing it trying to solve my problem.

    The last test:
    1. Add A record pointing from mightyremovals.co.uk to mbieniek.com,
    2. In the server admin panel, in multi site, I add mightyremovals and point it to mbieniek.com/asia
    3. When I go to mightyremovals.co.uk it takes me to blog mbieniek.com/asia, but when I click on any of the links there the URL changes to mbieniek.com/new-url

A different test with the right outcome:
    1. I pointed mightyremovals.co.uk to mbieniek.com.
    2. I created a folder mbieniek.com/0temp where I placed some simple html files (including index.html).
    3. In the server admin panel, in multi site I added and pointed mightyremovals.co.uk to mbieniek.com/0temp
    4. I can go to mightyremovals.co.uk and the “domain” works well. If I click on any link my URL will change accordingly (mightyremovals.co.uk/url ).

So, as you can see I can do what I want with simple html links. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work with wordpress.

In my situation, do I still need to use the plugin? is there anything I am missing?

    Well. Yes.

What you did was create an add-on domain.

In the server admin panel, in multi site I added and pointed mightyremovals.co.uk to mbieniek.com/0temp

There’s no point in WORDPRESS MULTISITE to point anywhere, so I’m going to have to assume you mean this was done in OVH MultiDom.

You should point mightyremovals.co.uk to mbieniek.com

    Thread Starter MateuszWP

    (@mateuszwp)

Solved! (finally). It’s much more simple than I thought!

Thank you Ipstenu for you help.

I have not used the MU plugin.

    The steps taken:
I created the add domain with the multi domain facility.
Then I changed the settings of wordpress URL to use the domain as its Site URL and WordPress URL.

    Server provider: ovh.co.uk

    Thanks again!

Then I changed the settings of wordpress URL to use the domain as its Site URL and WordPress URL.

Word of warning, if you see bizarre things later on, like URLs breaking and access not working right, there’s a reason.

The plugin is needed because changing it like that on Multisite is a BAD idea.

Use the domain mapping plugin. If you have the add-on domain set up right on your host’s control panel (which it sounds like you do), it’ll work.

    Thread Starter MateuszWP

    (@mateuszwp)

I see. Unfortunately I can not spend any more time with it right now as I have a few things going on. I am going to leave it for now and if there are any problems I will change it.

The only thing I worry about is whether it’s seen as the 301 redirection.

Just to clarify – I did not use Multisite for that. I used a normal wordpress blog in a folder.

Then … why are you posting about it in the MULTISITE section?

You gets multisite specific help here 🙂 (and there is no ‘MU Plugin’ people. If you’re using a plugin to turn on multisite, STOP. It won’t help)
