  • I’m a newbie and know nothing about blogging software…

At my University, we are considering using WordPress for blogs at our libraries. However, we would like to have one blog for each of the libraries.

    According to this page:

WordPress only allows one blog per wordpress download. Is this correct? Does this mean I will have to install one WordPress software for each of the libraries? Or can one WordPress software download provide an administrative interface for many blogs?

  • Yep, WordPress 1.5 can only allow 1 blog for each install. So you’d have to install it 100 times if you wanted 100 blogs. There is WordPress MU, which does what you want, but isn’t fully supported, and isn’t as nice as 1.5 since I believe it’s still using 1.2 as it’s backend. I can’t remember the link for it, but I don’t think it’d be hard to find.

There is also this http://wordpress.org/support/topic.php?id=29142 which is a modded version of 1.5. Not sure of the current level of development though.
Mu is http://mu.wordpress.org/ and there should be links to its’ own support site there too.

Our school wanted to use this as well, but will not use it until a well supported version of mu.wordpress.org is available.

I’ve attempted playing with it a few times and I’m not too excited yet. I can’t wait until they get that one down pat!

You can install the same download over and over, you just need to modify the wp-config to give each database a different name. I’ve done that and made the first user admin on all of them with the same password.

Unfortunately, you still would have to go into each blog everytime you make a server change or upgrade to WP to get it done.

    Good luck!

Is the status of MU changing at all? Even the support site for Mu isn’t actually finished!

I’ve had a look over the problem and attempted to modify WP have one install for many blogs as I have 6-7 going at the moment and the constant security updated are a pain with many many blogs to maintain. I wrote up the results of my work here:

    cpill – I got a PHP error when I hit that link…
