• Hey guys,

I encountered a strange problem with one WordPress instance. It is a normal blog running 3.9 with a custom theme.

As my client encountered a security problem with 3.9 (surprise!) I now wanted to upgrade this installation to 4.x. The webhost deleted some compromised files in the meantime, breaking the layout of the backend view, but it still works fine in the frontend.

However, it simply “ignores” the manual upgrade…?!

Automatic upgrade via the wizard is not possible, as the folder structure is kind of wicked (several subfolders, just drops “WordPress directory not found”) and only FTP mode is working, no matter which chmods I set up. 🙁

So first I tried to delete everything except the “wp-content” folder and uploaded the new WordPress files. The page still runs smoothly, but the backend is still broken and it says version 3.9 is running. So, no difference at all!

I then deleted each and every file not needed, so everything except the theme folder and the uploads. Then, I again uploaded the latest WordPress files. Same thing: Frontend running fine, backend broken, still saying v3.9 is running.

So, what’s wrong here? Did I miss something?
I upgraded a few installations manually in my life and never encountered this problem. The installation just ignores the new files, however that works?!

Is there any way to “push” WordPress in upgrading the database or realizing that version 4.x is running?

I really can’t wrap my head around it and I start to think I’m crazy…

    Thanks for your input!

    Best,
    Max
