I'd like to change the background color in the Mantra theme to a grey color to set it apart from the content. Is this possible?

    Thanks!

Yes. I tried entering custom css to override using #sidebar as the id, and it didn't work.

    Would it work using .widget-area?

Have you created a child theme? If not, you'll need to in order to accomplish this.

You just need to create a Child CSS file.

Thanks so much! If I use .widget-area I can make changes. Thanks for the link to the Child Themes info.

I don't think changing .widget-area would affect the entire white background.

    #primary and #secondary affect the entire sidebar(s).
