Support » Localhost Installs » MAMP to Staging: dont see theme changes!

  • Ive been using MAMP to work on a theme that ive customized to my liking. I created a subdomain for staging, created a new database, linked it to my staging site, downloaded wordpress to it and uploaded all my files to the server. The issue im having is that I don’t see the changes i made to the theme. Is there a step ive missed in order to see the site as ive worked in it localy with MAMP? Also perhaps worth noting, the theme that is now on my staging site looks a little bit different than when i downloaded it from scratch.

Im a wordpress newbie so a little confused here. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks 🙂

  • Did you import the data base to the staging site?

Yes I did and I see it on staging site, however not the way I changed it while working locally.

    Hi Johnny,

After you imported the database did you do a search and replace to change all the url’s to the new domain? Also the Home and Site URL must be edited. Whats the URL for the staging site?

Here is a good utility for migrating databases.

Here is the URL for the staging site :
    http://staging.alaindanielfortier.com/

Which files do I need to check for changing the URLs?

Oh yes Ive seen this tool for search and replace. Every time I run it, it tells me that 0 changes have been made for the search and replace. Where exactly does this php file have to be loaded?

if I upload it up like this [Link redacted] will it do the trick? Or does it have to be placed inside the theme folder?

    Hi,

Just follow the instructions of the utility but yes upload it to the blogs root folder (where wp-config is) ..make sure you rename the file and keep it secret! Then you would search for the old url alaindanialfortier.dev or whatever and replace it with http://staging.alaindanielfortier.com/

Also make sure your browser is not caching files like CSS. I think if you refresh using Crtl + F5 that will force the browser to download latest versions of CSS and other files. Otherwise, you can change your browser settings to always check for a current version of the page (and CSS files).

I just wanted to toss that out because a lot of people run into problems when developing because their browser uses the cached version of CSS and changes are not visible.
