MAMP install unsuccessful

    Following the instructions to download and install MAMP on my Mac, and then clicking ‘Open Start Page’, I get “Error: Could not connect to MySQL server!” I have tried both port settings.
    Mac OS X 10.8.2
    Safari 6.0.2
    MAMP 2.1.1
    Advice would be very welcome, on how to get started!
