I’m getting the exact same error after the plugin update yesterday:
Update failed: The update cannot be installed because we will be unable to copy some files. This is usually due to inconsistent file permissions.
Nothing should have changed in my install, it’s a backup from November 30th, where everything worked fine.
Had the same issue showed Deactivated .
Showed me error while updating and while deleting. For some reason thought I will Activate once to check if it works > and Boom !! its gone from my list of plugin.
Try it once might work for you too. If you need it again probably re install it again.

I have one site that 4.69 updated without error. The other 4 sites that fail miserably to update, all have woocommerce on them. Just an observation. This is the second message I’ve left on this forum, and have yet to hear back from the plugin vendor.
Do you host with Cloudways? If so, I had the same problem with my Cloudways sites
The Cloudways BOT PROTECTION is the sale malware plugin, but has limited features available on the front end. Even though I have BOT PROTECTION disabled, that seems to have restricted updates, and we could not delete it manually
I had to enable Bot Protection, then disable this again. This removed the plugin and I was then able to re-install the WordPress repository version.
Hey everyone!
Thank you for reaching out to us.
We’re investigating why this issue is occurring. In the meantime, can you please ask your WebHost to reset the permissions of the files & folders on the website?
Once done, can you please try to run the update? Let us know if you are still facing an issue after this.
Regards,
Aman KediaHey!
We can confirm that the issue is occurring on a handful of Cloudways websites and it’s an issue on Cloudway’s end. We’ve already spoken to their team & they’re working on fixing this.
I would highly recommend getting in touch with the Cloudways team regarding this & asking them to reset the file permissions while they fix this issue.
If you’re seeing this issue with sites hosted on any other WebHost, please do let us know.
Thank you,
Aman KediaThis has not been resolved
Still not solved and blaming the hoster, well… everything else is working fine.
Hey!
Thank you for your follow-up.
We have checked with Cloudways again & they have confirmed to us that it’s an issue on their end. You can contact the Cloudways team and they will confirm the same issue to you as well.
They are working on a fix for this but they’ve not pushed the fix yet.

I was having the same issue deleting the Malcare plugin. I had bot protection on, so I disabled it and re-enabled it. I then tried to delete via the WordPress admin section, but received an error. However, I was able to delete via SFTP.
Thanks for the suggestion!
We resolved this issue by resetting file permissions in Cloudways.

Hope this helps.
I had this problem with Bot Protection plugin by MalCare Security and I’m using Cloudways hosting – they installed this plugin when they ported over the site to their server when I changed hosting to them.
Anyway, I got in touch with Cloudways support, told them about the issue, and they fixed it then and there in 1 minute. I just refreshed the plugin page and the plugin updated fine. They “reset the file ownership to APP user” whatever that means.
Anyway, tldr, I got in touch with Cloudways and they sorted it out.
Reset file permissions on Cloudways worked for me. Quick and easy. Instructions here
