    Hello,

I’ve checked and confirmed that my CPT within CPT UI allowed comments. I then realized that the only way I can allow users to see the comment box, I have to click “Allow Comments” in the discussion box of the back-end, on let’s say my post titled “Heidi” under the Pick a Pooch posts.

I am planning to have multiple users make posts and list dogs for adoption, but do not want to let them have the option or have to go through the process of checking a box for the comments section to appear. Is there any way I can make this automatically allow comments on all my posts for this particular CPT?

    Thanks,

    Mark Lisek

What do you have for your “Default article settings” in your Discussion settings area? You may have it set in a way that has comments disabled by default, but still able to be turned on per-post.

We don’t have any specific settings in CPTUI for this topic, so chances are higher that my first question is on the right track.

The three options are “checked” which are:
    1. Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article
    2. Allow link notifications from other blogs (ping backs and trackbacks) on new articles
    3. Allow people to post comments on new articles

It then says (These settings may be overridden for individual articles)

Hmm. Any other comment-based moderation tools installed and used? Beyond that, it sounds like to me you shouldn’t be having to opt in every time at this point. It should be the reverse and opting out for comments on posts.

    Michael,

I don’t have any other plugins or moderation tools setup for comments, that’s why I wasn’t quite sure what else could be causing it. If all of my CPT UI settings are allowing it, would you know where else I should ask this question?

    Thanks,

It’s definitely possible that your theme is having an effect on things as well and customizing this experience.

Also just to be extra certain, for your post type posts that have comments enabled, is the frontend comment form showing like expected, when viewing the post?

On the backend when I edit the post itself, if just the “Comments” box is checked on at the very top when clicking screen options, then the comments on the front end will still not display. Only once I scroll down on the backend and check the box that says Discussion – and check on for “Allow Comments”, in addition to the comments at the top of the backend then the front end will in fact display the comments.

    Thanks!

Makes sense that you’d have to go through that flow, but it’s not the default flow from what I’ve historically seen with WordPress. This is why I’m wondering if there’s a customization somewhere in a plugin or your theme that’s making you have to opt in to have comments enabled immediately, instead of opt out.

I did a test yesterday for a different support thread where I registered a new post type, enabled comment support, added a new post, and I had comments enabled right away. My dev site is also using the default TwentyNineteen theme as well, which would be a theme that very likely was comment encouraging and wouldn’t try to alter default behavior.
