I have a site with WP-e-Commerce plugin installed http://www.gillylangton.co.uk. I had custom changes made to the checkout area to accommodate custom postage options such as Royal mail International, Royal Mail special delivery and Royal Mail Recorded delivery, with a price and tick box alongside each. The trouble I have is that WP-ecommerce is needing updating and I don’t know how I update it without loosing all the custom coding? I have tried before and lost everything and had to have it re-done for me. Sorry for my ignorance and please let me know if I have posted this in the wrong place. Many thanks.

  • You might want to ask this question in the support forum for WP e-commerce, which you can find here: https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/wp-e-commerce

Without knowing the specifics of how that plugin works, and how your developer made the changes, it’s hard to know if files were added or modified. If they were modified, then it gets tricky, because you’ll need to make the same modifications to the new version.

What you will need to do is use a program that can help merge two files. On a Mac I use BBEdit which is an editing program that has that feature built in. There are also dedicated programs just for that task.

Once you have that tool, you’re still going to have to have some knowledge of PHP to understand the areas of the code that have been updated for the new release vs. the changes your developer made for you. If you don’t understand the PHP well enough to make that distinction, then you are better off hiring someone to do the update for you.
