making a post "sticky" (3 posts)

I'm using wordpress as a poetry archive, not as a blog, and so I want one post to be the "home/welcome" entry, if you know what I mean. How can I make a certain post stick above all the others? I don't want to use that static page plugin, but if I had to...

Also, this is a stupid question, but how do I show the "5 latest posts" thing? Do I need a plugin?

One final question, how do I change the archive/category page to list the posts with JUST their title and not any of the text or dates?

    Thanks so so much!

    1. There are a few plugins that would do that: e.g. look for "sticky" or "adhesive".
1a. I am using for similar purposes (welcome) this plugin:
http://guff.szub.net/2005/01/27/get-a-post/ - but you need to edit the template file to make it work.

    2. Usually yes, that's the simplest way: find a recent_posts plugin.
I often use the Customizable posts listing from gere:
    http://www.coffee2code.com/wp-plugins/

    3. By editing the archive.php template file: delete or comment out whatever you don't want to show, and leave just the_title tag.
