  • Creating simple galleries can often be a pain. Two features would make the native WordPress gallery option much much much more useful:

    * rather than just link to attachment or media file, why not a custom link? In the gallery view this could be simply another text field below the caption. (Separate links for every image is key for having linkable logo galleries.)

    * make them responsive — kinda shocking that this hasn’t been updated since the web went mobile. A really simple UX would be having three settings for column numbers (for mobile, tablet and desktop). Meaning one could set 4 columns for desktop, 3 for mobile and 2 for mobile.

  • Saying “native WordPress gallery” used to mean the shortcode that was inserted into content from the editor.
These days, it could also mean the gallery block, which is quite different from the shortcode. The shortcode still remains (and works). It could also mean a series of individual image blocks (like for a logo gallery).

Responsive styling is the theme’s responsibility. The user shouldn’t have to be involved.

If you want changes, there are lots of gallery plugins available. Core is developed for the 80%. You can open an issue at https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/issues/
