I read that this plugin is not compatible with caching plugins like W3TC. But what if you configure to redirect “forbidden” visitors to a specific page (something like domain.com/not-allowed)? Won’t that make it compatible as the real homepage is not cached with a “not allowed” message?

Some caching plugins will cache the redirect.

You can try but there are no guarantees 🙂

In v1.1.31 there is now a warning included if your caching plugin is not honoring the do not cache headers that are send out.

Disclaimer: No guarantees are made but after some light testing the following caching plugins seem to work: Comet Cache, WP Super.
Cache Plugins that do NOT work: W3 Total Cache, Hyper cache
