  • Hi,

WordPress includes built-in migration tools for migrating content from other blogging platforms, migrating an .NET-based site is a little more challenging because everything must be moved manually.

After you’ve installed WordPress on your server , you are left with a shell into which you have to insert content. Because all WordPress sites are template-based, the first thing you must do is select a template. After you’ve selected a template, you can begin migrating your .NET site page by page and then uploading any additional media and other content stored on your server.

Migrating a website from .NET to WordPress can be quite complex and if you are not sure how it is to be done you should look for professional help.

    Thanks ,

I am also professional developer with 5 year experience but i thought its not good for WordPress because there is large complex data and relationship with tables.

Somethings are not fitted in the WordPress structure.

If you know any easy way to sort out this problem then please share with me.

    Hi Dhaval,

So WordPress does come with its own database structure. So yes, like you mentioned if it is going to be a tedious task for you to re-work your existing .NET tables into WordPress structure it would be better to just start off fresh in WordPress.

Having said that I was just curious to know why you are looking to shift to WordPress from the existing .NET product that you have ?

Our site is one of the biggest site which we want to convert to WordPress due to the simplicity it offers.

But the problem is to maintain the relationship between 450 tables i.e one to many relationship.

We’re trying to find the best way to migrate it to WordPress.

We’ve yet to start the project but yes the research work is being carried on as of now to see what will the best way to work with.

It’s pretty much impossible to give any ideas on how to do this correctly when no one here knows what the data is, or the relationships between all of those 450 tables. I have to say, I haven’t seem many systems yet that need that many tables, so something that’s complex enough to need that many variations of data is going to be a very difficult prospect no matter what or where you move it to.

Can it work? Yes, of course it can. Should it be done? No idea… it would take a whole lot more information to figure that one out.

Just as a note, WordPress does offer a lot of flexibility with custom post types, post meta values and custom database tables, and all of these can be added into one system, so the chances are that it can work.

    @catacaustic :

can you explain me from where to I start ?

how can I import data with a relationship ?

    Again…

It’s pretty much impossible to give any ideas on how to do this correctly when no one here knows what the data is, or the relationships between all of those 450 tables.

Without knowing what those tables are, what data they hold, and what the relationsips are, no one will be able to tell you much at all.

The way to start is to analyse what data is in the tables, where everything fits together, how all of the relationships work. After that, investigate the way that WordPress works and stores data and decide on how you feel is the best way to map this across. From there you can build your custom importer, and this can be done from either side or both sides depending on how you want things to work.

    Thanks,

But i am confused for the migration.

Exactly what do you want to know?

You’ve given us almost no information, no way to know how your data is arranged or what it even is about, how you want to do anything, or what plans you have so far. That means that there’s no way for anyone to help.

You need to make your own plans, as you are the only one that knows what needs to be done. Work out what needs to be migrated, plan how its going to be mapped into a WordPress system, and try to do it. If it works, great. If it doesn’t find out where it went wrong and fix it.

As a note, we aren’t here to work these things out for you. We can assist if you have questions, but you are the one that is going to have to do the work and figure it all out. After all, that’s your job, isn’t it? 🙂
