A user registers on the site he or she will receive an activation e-mail. If the activation link is not clicked and the e-mail gets permanently deleted, the account gets activated.
Shouldn’t the result be the account is still awaiting confirmation??

Can you please make sure that you’ve set up “require admin activation” in Ultimate member -> User roles -> Your user role -> Registration status – require admin activation.
You can also try to do a conflict test so we can rule out any conflicts with other plugins or your theme. Here is the doc on how to do a conflict test if you are not sure how to do it.
