The main image only replaces when you select the variation dropdown from the product page.
Do you mean it changes as soon as the product page is loaded?

Yes, it changes as soon as the single product page is loaded.
I do choose a default variation on the product page configuration, usually the variant with better sales.
CENARIO:
I have a few products with 2 variants, and i use only one image for each variation.
But when the product page is loaded i get 3 images on my product gallery:
IMAGE VARIANT A, IMAGE VARIANT B, IMAGE VARIANT A (again).
By the way, this plugin is great and help me a lot with google core web vitals.

Are you using any other plugin that overrides the single product page behavior?
Such as the variation swatch plugin or video gallery plugin.
To troubleshoot, disable all plugins but WooCommerce and temporarily switch to the “Twenty Twenty-Two” theme – does it work?
If yes, you have a conflict with your current theme or one of the plugins.

Iam just using Better Variation Price for Woocommerce, no variations swatches or video gallery plugin.
Iam using Storefront, but i will do as you said.
