• Mailto links were made to open in a new window so, I deleted =target_blank because I didn’t want it to open in a new window. It is still currently opening in a new window. I have deleted cache and super cache. Any ideas why it can still read the code when it isn’t there? Would like some help my other sites don’t have this problem and are working fine. Thanks!

mailto links should open in your email client, not your browser, in the first place…

    Have you tried changing themes?

yes, I know the other person who created it did not however. I am trying to correct it. No, I can’t change themes we have designed the site for a client and I found the mistake while doing final review.
There is another site with the same theme and I found the same problem. I deleted the target_blank and updated it and it worked fine. It seems to be tied to this one site for some reason. That’s why I tried deleting the cache.

Okay, but rewind with me for a moment.

That’s not how mailto links work in the first place.

The mailto usage calls the users default email client. It does not open a window or tab in any instance.

So how did you make that work to start with? 🙂

She highlighted the text, created a mailto link, inserted the mailto:address@email.com and then checked the box by open in a new window. FYI…It does open in the mail client but it also opens in a new blank browser window.

That … shouldn’t even work. What on earth….

Can you link to a page where this is happening?

http://mwafg.com/contact-us/ in the sidebar and the footer. It does it in Chorme and Firefox. Not in IE.
    and here too http://mwafg.com/our-team/
It is really strange. Like I said I changed in on another site with the same theme with no problems.
Basically all email links just on this site.

Okay… Any plugins different between the sites?

    Thread Starter mtressab

    (@mtressab)

They both use the same plugins.

That … is absolutely weird. My only guess would be you have some JS forcing it.

I know! I have tried many different ways to get it to go away and can’t figure it out. It is very frustrating that I can’t because usually I can. HA! I figured when I tried to fix the other one that I would have complications, but no. Which is good, but harder to test and solve. I was hoping someone else would have some insight on it.

Do you have custom coding in your functions.php document to open external links in a new tab/window? I do in many custom themes I have created and have found that if an email address is not within the same domain as the website it is opening a new tab. However, I am on Mac OSX and the issue is only happening for me in Chrome. All other browsers work fine…

Regardless, I hope that there is some other php I can get in there that forces mailto: links to not open a tab in Chrome but have not found anything yet. If I do find an answer I will be sure to share it here!
