Support » Plugin: Subscribe2 » Mac users are receiving emails with black background?

  • Resolved ahobday

    More than one Mac user has contacted us about our emails (We use the paid Subscribe2 HTML plugin).

    They’re receiving the full emails as expected, but the background on those emails is black – since the text is still a lighter grey and not white it makes the emails hard to read.

    Is this something the plugin might be doing?

  • @ahobday,

    It would seem that Apple Mail is rendering the content of your email slightly differently from other clients but it will still be rendering the information it’s given. Somewhere in your email you are specifying a black background. This is likely in a CSS CLASS or ID from your theme so you need to find it and remove it.

    There’s some sort of parent class which lists all possible classes and it has a transparent background set. Do you think Apple Mail might render a transparent value as black while other email clients don’t?

    I’ve never seen a black background on my Mac so I still suspect it is the CSS somewhere. Try removing the transparent markup and then we’ll know if that’s contributing.

    Removing the transparent markup didn’t help. Looking through the stylesheet for the site some more, I notice that the main “body” tag has its background set to black.

    Is there any reason this would show up on Apple Mail/iPhones and nothing else?

    To be more specific, this is the CSS I’m talking about:

    body {
    	background:url(images/bg.jpg) repeat-x #000;

    Apple Mail and iPhones may well render HTML slightly differently from other email clients, if you remove that black background you should be fixed – is it really needed anyway? Often developers add a black background in development so they can see where needs styling as it’ll be blacked out.
