• I’ve been at this for three days now and I’m just barely making progress. I have a site http://hypnosisproductions.com that I want to incorporate a blog into. I downloaded WordPress and followed the instructions. Based on previous posts I entered my database information from GoDaddy in the wp-config-sample file. I then tried to upload the whole WordPress folder to my FTP folder at GoDaddy. After that I am lost. I tried http://www.hypnosisproductions.com/wp-admin/install.php, but I get page not found. When I run just the /wp-admin/install.php in Safari I get a page that talks about beginning and has a bunch of code, but where do I enter this code? What do I do next? Thanks for any help,
    Mike

  • Id like to help but I am feeling sleepy 🙂

looks like you have some funky .htaccess rewrite rules running. Maybe that’s screwing stuff up. Try maybe renaming the htaccess file until the install is done, then tweak it to work proper with WP?
Also, just FYI, I’ve seen numerous reports of people have a TON of problems getting anything (not just WP) hosted properly on GoDaddy, due to really really nutty PHP restrictions.

Mike, did you save the wp-config-sample.php file as wp-config.php?
Depending on whether you place the blog, you might have to copy the index.php file, change the 3rd line in the copy, and place that new index.php for the blog where you want it to be.
For instance, if you have your web page served from the public_html directory, then, the index.php or index.html for the website might be there. Let’s say you have in that same directory another folder called ‘blog.’ Inside ‘blog’ you have two things, index.php for the blog, and wordpress.
I installed my blog yesterday and got it up and running in about five minutes flat. I had to wipe out the database and reinstall twice cuz I kept on screwing things up. But I’ve got the hang of it now. Feel free to email me at caribsea@gmail.com, if you wish.
I set up my webhosting with Hosting.MyMarkdown.com for $2.10 per month. I’ve had absolutely no problems setting anything up. They’ve got all I need to interact with the database and make changes.
    HTH.

Yes, I changed the host name, database name, username and password at the top of -sample and saved it as wp-config.php. I think I know what you are saying about the two index files. I uploaded the whole folder that wordpress came in after I changed the file onto my FTP site. I was hoping to get a page with wordpress up and running and then incorporate that into one of my pages so it looked like part of the pre-existing site. While I was uploading my wordpress folder I kept getting FTP errors, but it uploaded. I’ll try again, but I might just be in touch.
    Thanks,
    Mike

What do I change the 3rd line to? I checked and my folder on my FTP site was only 4kb and my folder on my desktop is 1.3MB so ther must be something going on there. Any advice on changing the index.php file?
    Thanks,
    Mike

So what is a good reasonably priced hosting service, that offers database support?

I use Agile Digital, and I’ve been very happy with their services. They are primarily a Mac OS X outfit and my site is running on one of their Xserve machines. The support has also been terrific — it seems they have tons of experience with WordPress. While their personal plan doesn’t include database support, it wouldn’t hurt to ask about it anyway.
Regarding domain name registrars, I would recommend RegisterFly. The UI could use a bit of work, but RegisterFly let you use their DNS servers and includes the most advanced DNS tools I’ve seen — for free. Most other registrars, including GoDaddy, charge extra to use their DNS servers.
    Anyway, hope this helps!

When I run /wp-admin/install.php in my browser, http://www.hypnosisproductions.com should come before it right (or whatever your domain name is)? Also before I get too deep into this, can I insert the blog into http://www.hypnosisproductions.com/current right in the middle with the picture on the left and the nav bar on the right? Will I need to use frames to keep the window the same size? Thanks
    Mike

    No you won’t.

Need to use frames? So I can just insert it using the PHP tags?
