Lots of spam started on July 23rd for me and has gotten worse every day since. We made no changes on site except updates.

I tried the honeypot filters suggested in another thread to alter the honeypot message and CSS, but it didn’t help.

    Help!!

Did you change the ID text to something more bot-tasty?

    yes “nickname”

I thought I would also let you know that I have other websites running WordPress 4.8.1 on the same server and they are not getting spammed, but they are still running Contact Form 7 version 4.8 so I am not updating CF7 until there is a fix.

For the site that was getting spammed, I converted to Gravity Forms and it stopped.

Hi Dick, it’s not likely an issue with the version of the CF7 plugin. The method of spam prevention performed by the Honeypot is simplistic – which is both a blessing and a curse. This isn’t Akismet, or SFS, or other complicated library-lookup spam prevention systems. The plugin works as intended, but you may just be being attacked by bots or actual human spammers for which a honeypot will not work.

There are several methods for tweaking the honeypot to help prevent spam (renaming fields — all fields + honeypot field), overriding the outputted HTML to a more obtuse/less accessible hunk of HTML, etc. These are discussed on this plugin page as well as the plugin’s home page. If all of these fail though, and they very definitely can (again, it’s not magic, it’s a simple method of spam prevention)… you’ll need to use a stronger spam prevention plugin — like a CAPTCHA.

Thanks for your followup and feedback. 🙂
