OK, I’ve spent a few hours upgrading from 2.2.2. First I set up a subdomain at dev.borderlinecollective.org. Did a new install of WordPress, then imported the old site. Made sure it was fine, then upgraded the main domain at borderlinecollective.org. (These are on two separate databases). For the subdomain I did a completely clean install, for the main domain I left the wp-content folder intact (since the dev subdomain was still linking to images on the main domain).

The main site looks fine, but somehow the index page of the dev site has now disappeared…when you go to the link there’s an error message. The index page in this particular theme (Andreas Viklund 01-12, very old) isn’t a separately-created homepage, it’s just the main index template in the theme editor…a blurb on top and then the posts on the bottom (which you can see on the main site). The info in the editor view has not changed, it’s still there. All “previous” links are supposed to look the same, the blurb on top is always above the posts. On the dev site you now cannot access any of the archives that way, but all individual posts, or monthly archives or category archives are fine.

When I use my FTP client I see that index.php is still there in the dev folder. The page actually disappeared sometime during the upgrade of the main folder, which led me to suspect it was somehow reading the index page from the main domain. But now that the main site’s index is working again, the index for the dev subdomain is still gone.

Any thoughts? My goal was to work on the site’s redesign on the subdomain, but I want to make sure everything is working and matching the original site before I do so. And it was definitely there before I started the upgrade on the main domain!

Can you quote the error message?

“Error 404 – Page not found!

The page you trying to reach does not exist, or has been moved. Please use the menus or the search box to find what you are looking for.”

It’s really like it’s the index.php file that is missing, except I don’t see how it can be. I see one in the main dev folder but also within the content/themes/wp-andreas whatever folder. All other pages, posts, and images are appearing.

But I didn’t change a thing on the dev subdomain once I confirmed it was working. So it seemed like maybe it was due to a missing file on the main domain, yet it really doesn’t appear anything is missing there either. I didn’t delete the original content folder. For some reason I had to re-import the site because after installing the new WP on the main domain it wasn’t reading any content…I’m not sure if that is normal or not, but on the “upgrading wordpress – extended” page it doesn’t say anything about that, it sounds like it’s more or less automatic…maybe it just wasn’t because it was such an old version of wordpress.

Perhaps WordPress is looking in the wrong place, which could be a variety of things. What’s the URL or your blog?

Hi, I posted them above but they weren’t clickable. Here they are:

Main domain (index page is working) http://www.borderlinecollective.org

Subdomain (no index page but other pages working) http://dev.borderlinecollective.org

    Thanks!

That error either means that you don’t have any posts yet, or you have assigned the wrong front page at Settings/Reading in your Dashboard.

How bizarre! Front page setting had indeed changed to “static page” when there is no static page set up. This happened to me another time, before I did any of the upgrading, when the sidebar widgets disappeared and had to be reset, no idea why. Glad it was something simple, thanks for the advice.
