Support » Theme: Atahualpa » lost header and footer

  • Hi There
I see there is a new version of Atahualupa.

I am grateful for the updates but last time I updated it,
I lost my header and footer. I AM NOT WEBSITE TECHIE—just so you know.

Is there any way to update without that happening again?

I got some advice last time but did not understand it. The most understandable was to restore the previous version from my back up.
    Isnt that defeating the purpose?

I love this theme, but I don’t want to tremble with every update.
    Thank you A lot! Mary

Try posting on the theme’s dedicated forum:
You may get a faster & more informed response there.

There is a new feature in the current release (3.7.12) that will allow you to avoid this issue.

Really??? Thank you– Jugglehead! that is great!
So I will update. If it doesnt work out I will let you know.

    Also to Esmi,
I did go to that site. It was a very “busy site”and I didn’t understand what it was about. It looks like I have to a member of something.

Thank you both for your responses!

Actually, juggledad is a mod on that forum. so I’m sure you would have got an answer with a little time. These forums are far busier (one post every 10 seconds or less).

    Thank you Esmi,
I am going to spend more time on it. Thank you for encouraging me on this! LOL!
Sometimes we web owners get so busy, we dont take the time for something new and can miss something special.

    I really appreciate your reply!
    Be well, Mary

How was the header there before, were the theme’s files modified?

    Thank you for responding!
Yes probably. I am not sure. I had a designer create and install and he made it smaller.
Is that what you are asking?

Do you think that is the problem?
I want to use this awesome theme on another site. But I am not sure how to fix it.
If this is the problem then we wont modify the header areain such a way to cause this.
Let me know when you can, thank you, I appreciate it! Mary

These modifications need to be made through a Child Theme environment.

When a theme updates, it just replaces all theme files with the newer versions; disregarding any changes you’ve made to them.

A Child Theme is another theme that inherits the functionality of your current theme, although theme settings will have to be made again and images may have to be moved. Through inheritance, you can modify the theme, keep your changes and take advantage of theme updates without worry.

Thank you for getting back to me Andrew!

Where do I get a child theme?Does Atahualpa have that option built in?

Do all updates on wordpress themes work this way? I have another theme that this didn’t occur, but I don’t know if the modifications changed the code.

Also, I didn’t lose my footer and other customizations were not lost.
Does this occur only when the coding is changed?

    Thank you, Mary

For this new feature, uyou do not need a child theme. the only reason you would need a child theme is if you modify the theme code. Atahualpa is built so the theme options are stored in the database and remain across updates.

Prior to version 3.7.12 you had to store your logo, favicon and header images in the theme folder, but starting with 3.7.12, you can create a folder in the wp-content folder and put your images there (see the for directions) and the automatic WordPress upgrade won’t delete them since they won’t be in the theme folder.

So you will have to set this up after upgrading to 3.7.12 and for releases after 3.7.12 you won’t loose your images if you have it set up properly.
