• Can anyone help me, I upgraded using this guide. And after I followed EVERY step I can see the site, but all my old entries are completely gone. I thought /wp-admin/upgrade.php was supposed to do this for you.

  • Did you backup your database?

Why, is that important to the upgrade, I thought it was only in case something went wrong with the upgrade.

You mean the database is wiped out? ‘Cause it’s not conceivable, kinda.

You have to back up your database should anything go wrong with the upgrade.

It is not important to the upgrade itself but it is VERY important if you want to ensure you lose nothing in the whole upgrade process!

i live life on the edge, but even i took the couple minutes to make a db backup before starting to migrate my hosted blogs to 1.5 πŸ˜‰

So he should be able to just restore the database backup now and it would put it all back, right?

Oriecat, that would be a “yes”.

Idbehold, try changing to the default or classic template. Do you see your posts?

Well, I still have all the old files backed up. I guess Ill just… try it again *sigh*

well, restoring the database will put it back to pre-1.5 status, so 1.5 won’t work with it until he runs /wp-admin/upgrade.php.

of course, if he’d rather, he could restore the original 1.2 files (or whatever version he was running) and restore the database and everything should be back to the way it was πŸ™‚

Ok, I guess I’ll just put my old files back on the server. I thought there would be a file I could edit or something that would change where WP looks for my old posts. BTW where does WP store all your posts?

The posts are stored in your sql database that you specify when you set it up originally. Did you change the database or something? Why would you need to change where it looks for the posts? That’s set in wp-config.php. Did you remember to copy the old one back?

The file that tells WordPress where to store your posts is /wp-config.php – it should contain the name of the database you want to use, it’s location or IP address, the login name and password for it, and the prefix WP should use on the tables it creates.

If your database has been munched up, then restoring the old WP files will not bring it back. However, if the reason you can’t see any posts now has to do with WordPress having a goofed up /wp-config.php file, just double-check your information and see if it works πŸ™‚

Your posts are stored in your database, which is why backing it up is a good idea…

And here are the instructions on how to do that: http://codex.wordpress.org/Backing_up_your_database

OK, I figured it out. I put the upgrade and all my old files onto a new database, so I just had to change the wp-config to look at my old database, thanks for all you help.
