Support » Fixing WordPress » looking for custom subscription membership addon/dev

  • please forgive this WordPress newbie (not even sure i qualify for that)

Hello, I am trying to launch a new site using WordPress but I have not found an add on that will do exactly what I need. in a nut shell, I’m looking for a free to join custom field membership directory site where the free members can see only statistics of other members and some limited membership info (to get an idea of who is a member),

The paid member will be able to see more limited membership data (of my choosing) and be able to contact other members via internal messaging system (so they can’t contact other members outside the system).

the whole idea is to provide a directory site that with a paid subscription one may contact another member via internal messaging system to further explore the possibility of doing business together.

Any help is appreciated, might need to speak to custom WordPress programmer… where’s the best place to look.

  • Hi hyepo66,

There are quite a number of options that you can explore. I’ve seen how the evolution of membership plugins has matured to the point of offering very solid solutions.

For the most part, membership plugins offer a premium or pro option (if now right off the bat).

You can begin by taking a read at a post by Chris Lema titled: “Comparing WordPress Membership Plugins“.

Based on your description, I would suggest the following plugins:

As far as interaction with members of your site, I would recommend Buddy Press and bbPress. Both of these plugins are by Automattic which means that are pretty solid and work very good out of the box in my own experience as they integrate pretty seamless.

And because of the fact that recently Atomattic aquired WooThemes, I can only imagine that WooCommerce Memberships would be also a good option.

I myself have used Membership 2 pro with good success.

In reality all of this will require some learning and tinkering with all the options but I think it is worth the try.

    I hope this info helps!

Thank you so much for your reply. You’ve given me a lot to work through over the weekend… Thanks. I never would have been able to put that list together myself in many years…

You are welcome! … I hope you find the right mix of plugins for what you are trying to create. Like i said before, spending time to test and tinker with the plugins is worth the try.
