Support » Plugin: User Specific Content » Looking for a User Role Manager that works with User Specific Content plugin

  • I have the latest version of User Specific Content and it seems to work fine if I select the username of the person that should have access to specific pages. However, I am working with a larger group of users, and need to set up roles/capabilities such as Manager, Employee, etc. to ease the administration of this. I am currently using the User Role Editor Plugin to create roles and assign users to them. These roles show up in the list of checkboxes under the User Specific Content section of the page, but when I select a role, such as Manager to see the page, this does not work – the page is hidden from this user and they get the default message I put up.

I would guess that I will probably not be able to get troubleshooting help with the User Role Editor plugin, but if anyone can, that would be great. Alternately, can anyone recommend a user role/capabilities plugin that is compatible with the User Specific Content plugin? Please don’t just list off a bunch of other role/capability plugins as there are a lot of them, but only if you have used them both and they are compatible.

  • Hi @gagnonconsulting,

I did some troubleshooting on this since I had the same problem.
In short: When you create a role in URE it will have a display name and a role ID. The role ID is added to the meta data of the user in the database. USC, on the other hand, will get the URE display name of the role instead of the ID. Which in some cases, e.g. if you used spaces or special characters in the display name, won’t match.

The quick solution: Use the same display name and role ID in User Role Editor.

    Hope it helps! 🙂

Vibban is absolutely correct, I found out the hard way. I wish I had come here first.

The role name and role id (sometime also called slug) must match exactly except that the name can have upper case letters which it converts to lower case prior to the compare. I would also not use any special chars.

Wow thank you this saved me a nice headhache !
This is pretty stupid tho, the way the meta box works should be the same as the shortcode does. And using the name as an ID is really a bad idea.
I had to rename all my 20 roles to make them match exactly the ID. And then I had to re-select the user roles for every page…
This plugin is great but if the author could read this and fix those really little bugs it would be awsome (it shall not take more than 5 minutes).
