Hi, I'm researching hosts for a small business site based on WordPress. The site will be a standard format and will act as a company brochure, so it will have nothing more complicated than some eye candy and a contact form. Thus, I don't anticipate needing any specialised (or expensive) business packages or facilities. I also have some limited experience with an earlier version (one point something) a few years ago, but as I said, I will be configuring this incarnation as a standard format website following advice I found on build-your-website.co.uk.
Before posting this, I found a much older thread on a similar subject here but as it dates back to 2005, thought I would ask the question again!
I currently have a .co.uk domain registered with UKReg/Fasthosts and was going to use them until I realised that they didn't have one-click installation of WP and they also wanted another £25 for access to MySQL! Unfortunately, this was after parting with a tenner for 1 months hosting - happily I didn't buy the 12 month package!
Other hosts I've looked at include:
Bluehost $83.40/year (~£53)*
Dreamhost $47.40/year (~£30)*
Compila £16.43/year **
1and1 £2.49/month, £29.88/year ***
Currency conversions using XE.com. All prices are cheapest on offer.
* prices discussed using live chat on both websites.
** no-one available for chat so unclear what price I would pay as I already have the domain - their basic price includes a domain.
*** but what's the catch? What am I not getting that I'll need?
I've decided that one-click installation is desirable but whether it outweighs a lower-priced host that doesn't offer it, I haven't yet decided, although I would rather not faff about with databases!
1. Of the above, who's best?
2. Are there any other strong contenders I should look at?
3. Does it matter having a UK-based business hosted abroad?
3.1 Are there ramifications for search ranking?
3.2 Will I show up in a UK-only page search of Google?
Any advice gratefully received!
