    Sorry, but you need to go back and create a child theme for any modifications to a default theme – as is, your changes will be overwritten when WP is updated and it’s also crucial that you have an unmodified version of the default theme for troubleshooting.

    I would like it to be centred vertical with the site title- but how??
    I know it is a responsive design – could title and logo alignment ‘confuse’ the display?

    I once had a logo with the Title & tagline following, and yes, there were various problems both because of “mobile first” and because IE needs its own CSS. So, I just pasted my logo onto the header image, then had someone get the Title & tagline positioned properly…and like WPyogi has mentioned, that should all be done in a Child Theme.
