Login form in sidebar

i’m tying to add a login form to my sidebar, it works, but i want it to show “logged in as” if a user is logged in, so i copied the “if ( $user_ID )” from the comments template, but it doesn’t seem to work in the sidebar. anything i need to include? is there a way to do this?
