I suspect that it’s because I have password protected the wp-admin directory with a captcha-esque tactic that gives you the user name and password in the text box. I do this to stop brute force attacks in their tracks. Is there any way that I can get this login page to work without removing that security?

Not knowing the details of what you are doing, I couldn’t say for sure. However, I would suspect that yes, that is the issue (at least it’s where I would look first).

Most of the wp-login captchas use the ‘authenticate’ filter hook. If that’s what yours does, then you may be able to bypass it with the technique outlined here.

OK, so my theory was wrong. I disabled that password protection on the wp-admin folder and it’s still happening. When I try to login on the front end at

    http://website.com/members-login/

    I get the following error:

    http://www.evernote.com/l/ACDZv2htTFZNyLQaCM_C9svGhHfqunhk88o/

    However, if I go to:

    http://website.com/wp-admin/

It lets me log in fine with that same credentials. Any ideas?

I figured it out. I had to disable recaptc for login in iThemes security. All good now.
