Login Debacle

I cannot login to my wordpress site and havn’t been able to for some time. The trouble started when I closed an email account that I used in the set-up. I have logged in successfully once since, following instructions to modify plugin php text. I have, today, followed instructions to reset the password in MySQL through my host admin. This doesn’t make a diffrence!! What do I do?
p.s. if wordpress allowed unique usernames surely password recovery would be simpler!!!!!!
