please help. I’m not very proficient with this website stuff.

If the installation was done from your hosts control panel i’d be inclined to ask them for help, as there may be subtle differences between the software they provide compared to the vanilla/regular install of WordPress..

    If not.. my suggestion:

Re-upload the wp-includes and wp-admin folders from a fresh copy of WordPress. You’ll need to have FTP access to do that, but it’s matter of sending two folders across the FTP (only those two).

    You can download WordPress here.
    http://wordpress.org/download/

You’ll need to extract the files from the zip first, simply create a folder (on your desktop if you like), extract the files to it, then drag and drop the wp-includes and wp-admin folders from the new folder into the website area where WordPress is installed via your FTP client/application. You should be asked to confirm overwriting the files, so click yes and wait for the files to transfer.

Summary: You’re basically just overwriting the two existing wp-includes and wp-admin folders with fresh ones.

If you’re not sure about how to do any of the above, please post back, please don’t just jump in and move or send stuff around without being sure about what you’re doing(i won’t take any responsibility if you mess something up), i’ll happily clarify on areas you’re unsure of.

conceptually I understand what your fix is about, but I don’t know how to get FTP access. we have only ever updated the website via the online dashboard.

I can only suggest having a chat with your webhost and obtaining your login details so you get yourself setup with FTP access. If you explain the problem, who knows, perhaps they’ll offer to re-upload the files for you.. or be able to guide you on how to setup an FTP account.

Without access to the site’s files, there’s little you can do..
