# Log-in error

 * I built a website a while back and went to log in to update it and came across
   this error…I think WP just needs to be updated on the site. I can’t even login
   to do so. Any ideas what is going on here?

 * Hm, that is a bit of a mess. In this case, I’d recommend correcting this by simply
   upgrading manually. That will upgrade you and replace any damaged core files:
   [https://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress#Manual_Update](https://codex.wordpress.org/Upgrading_WordPress#Manual_Update)
 * If you still see the same problem, try [manually resetting your plugins](http://codex.wordpress.org/FAQ_Troubleshooting#How_to_deactivate_all_plugins_when_not_able_to_access_the_administrative_menus.3F).
   If that resolves the issue, reactivate each one individually until you find the
   cause.
 * If that does not resolve the issue, access your server via [FTP or SFTP](http://codex.wordpress.org/FTP_Clients),
   navigate to `/wp-content/themes/` and rename the directory of your currently 
   active theme. This will force the default theme to activate and hopefully rule-
   out a theme-specific issue (theme functions can interfere like plugins).

 * Turns out the PHP was updated and was not compatible with the theme in use. PHP
   was returned to an earlier version and everything is good to roll.
