Locked out of admin and site format is all messed up (6 posts)

So I'm fairly new to wordpress. I've been doing just fine so far, but I've run into a huge setback. I was trying to change my site's root domain to saltspringcandles.com, rather than saltspringcandles.com/wordpress; I was foolishly experimenting in the general settings area with just changing the url, which didn't seem to do anything.

I quickly thought better of it and changed it back to the original url, planning to use the recommended method for changing the root. I must have done something bad though, because now I have been locked out of the admin for my site (just get the error 404 message) AND my site's format is completely messed up when I look at it.

I have tried checking the functions.php file and the url looks exactly as it was before. I see lots of possible troubleshooting options, but I'm unsure what the best next step to try is? what did I do? Why won't it even ask me for my username and password?

Am I missing something really elementary here? Thanks for any advice!

Thank you. I've tried all of these methods of changing the site url. I must have really screwed it up, because they won't work; the urls match exactly what I'm typing in, when I try to access my admin and I still get an error message. I'm just about fried out on trying to fix it and wondering how I can simply start over again with wordpress, my theme, etc...?

There is probably some other element of error that I made along the way that is causing the usual methods to fail for me...

I guess there are probably threads I can look up about starting over....

I don't think you need to start over - lots of people run into this problem and fix it :)!

Did you change the URL's back to:

    saltspringcandles.com/wordpress

Which method did you use and exactly what did you do?

I think the functions.php file method works well...
