locating images from within widget

Converting to multisite means I cannot hard-wire the site’s url into the image path. When including a CSS file, the path to other files is relative to the file being loaded. I need to understand how to do the same sort of thing from within a widget. The widget needs to refer to several images, but I don’t know where the images are relative to the widgets.
