Localized date problems

Hmm it’s interesting wp says https://codex.wordpress.org/Function_Reference/date_i18n:

“If the locale specifies the locale month and weekday, then the locale will take over the format for the date. If it isn’t, then the date format string will be used instead. “

It implies that the format should only be used if the locale doesn’t specify it?

From a quick bit of googling, I cannot see anything helpful about the ‘th and rd’. Maybe one has to apply translation to the format string first (the translation strings exist for ‘% th’ but not for all possible combinations of format strings.)

Without getting too bogged down it, other options are:

Remove the English th/rd in the event listing date formats.

Day format without th/rd
D\&\n\b\s\p\;j\&\n\b\s\p\;M

Then you’d get something like
