Support » Localhost Installs » Localhost install on XAMPP: imagick, is not installed

  • Recently, my localhost install of WP has stopped showing and allowing editing of my images in the Media Library when the library contents is shown in the icon view (as compared to the line-item view. (In the line-item view, the images show, but that view does not allow any editing.) This loss in the icon view is recent and so far has proven difficult to fix.

I’ve spent 3 days on this without any success. Have searched numerous search engines and YouTube. Have nothing that is timely or a solution; most are for linux solutions and that doesn’t help.

Could really use some direction and being pointed to step-by-step solutions that will work.

    Thanks in advance.

    Running:
    WordPress 5.8.1
    PHP 7.4.13, Apache/2.4.46 (Win64) OpenSSL/1.1.1h PHP/7.4.13 on XAMPP 7.4.21; running on Windows 10 Pro (10.0.19043)
Thread Safety Enabled, Thread API is Windows Threads. There is no mention of imagick in my phpinfo.php, and the Tools/Site Health in WordPress states: “The optional module, imagick, is not installed, or has been disabled.”

Download the imagick extension for Windows from here:

    https://windows.php.net/downloads/pecl/releases/imagick/3.5.1/

Based on the system details you provided, php_imagick-3.5.1-7.4-ts-vc15-x64.zip is most likely the file you need. I believe the imagick.dll file should go in the PHP extensions directory, and the remaining DLL files in the main PHP directory. Ask the XAMPP folks where those locations reside in their application. Since this is a very common addition to PHP, I wouldn’t be surprised if they already have some documentation available on their support site.

    Dion,
I noticed there is a version for x86 and 64bit. WE are running on 64bit, but I read somewhere that the XAMPP platform may be x86 focused. The sites currently working on will be transferred to Linux-based hosting companies. Just wondering if you have any input as to which version of the php_imagick file I should use???

    Thanks again.

    Dion,

    Just a follow-up.

Thanks to your help, I believe I’m back on track (I hope).
I went back a checked a YT topic that, though it’s a couple years old, it has a few more steps: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZ9_rq6c9uY

The first part of the topic is dated and is where I was stuck due to the change in the reference pages it pointed to. However, starting at about time stamp 4:50, the additional steps begin. I mention this just in case someone else comes looking for help with this topic.

    Thanks again.

    Nope.

Still didn’t work. phpinfo is not showing imagick….

    Still in the hunt.

After ALSO downloading the Imagemagik Engine plugin (from WP), v.1.7.1, still cannot see the thumbnails of the images in the icon style view of Media/Library. However, if I click on any of the blank icon images which takes me to the “Attachment Details” dialogue box, and click on the “Edit Image” button, I can now get to where I think I want to be. It is not like all of this used to be in WordPress, so I will have to keep searching.

If ANYONE has any ideas as to get the blank icons to show up as the actual thumbnails, I would really like to hear them.

(Hoping others to come will benefit from this info!)

    Thanks again.

Hmm…forgot something. You must also add the following line in php.ini to the list of extensions that are loaded:

    extension=php_imagick.dll

If the extension still doesn’t load, there should be an error message in the PHP error log that will tell you what went wrong.

Hello Dion, I had also installed Localhost by Bitnami; however, there I’m facing few issues with floating the sidebar widgets. Actually, I want to create the sidebar to be look like this website https://apkmortgage.com/
